Veneers Q & A

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made covers that bond to the front surface of your teeth. Originally developed to create red carpet-worthy smiles for Hollywood movie stars, veneers are currently one of the most popular and well-established procedures in cosmetic dentistry.

Porcelain is the preferred material for making veneers due to its ability to resist stains and mimic the light-reflecting appearance of real tooth enamel. Composite resin is another popular choice due to its lower cost. Dr. Linda discusses the best materials for your individual needs during a consultation.

How can veneers improve my smile?

Dental veneers enhance the appearance of your smile by improving any of the following conditions:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Crooked teeth

Who is a good candidate for veneers?

If you’re unhappy with the way your teeth look when you smile or speak, talk to Dr. Linda about your individual concerns. She may recommend veneers if you:

  • Maintain good dental health
  • Are committed to proper oral care and hygiene
  • Have specific aesthetic goals and realistic expectations
  • Have enough healthy tooth enamel to place veneers

Conditions that may disqualify you for dental veneers include:

  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Root canal

What should I expect when getting dental veneers?

The process of getting veneers takes at least two appointments. At your first visit, Dr. Linda prepares the teeth to receive the veneers by removing a thin layer of enamel from the teeth. She then makes a dental impression, which she sends to a lab to fabricate your veneers.

In the meantime, Dr. Linda covers the teeth she removed enamel from with temporary veneers. She removes these when you return to the office to receive your new permanent veneers.

Once Dr. Linda bonds the veneers to your teeth, you’re ready to go out and share your stunning new smile with the world.

With proper care, porcelain veneers can last 10-20 years. Composite resin veneers don’t last quite as long, but are less expensive to replace.
